It's Kind Of A Funny Story: Archetypal Journey

I am near the end of It's Kind Of A Funny Story, by Ned Vizzini, and i really like the book. The main character, Craig Gilner has gone through a lot. In the beginning of the book, he has to get into the right high school, and he ends up getting into one of the best high schools in Manhattan, Executive Pre-Professional High School, and the high school is a very stressful high school. In Executive Pre-Professional High School, Craig finds himself being stressed with a lot of homework, and he finds himself being competitive with many of the students there, which he can't compete with. One night, Craig wants to commit suicide. He can't take his depression and his stress anymore. Before Craig tried to kill himself, he called the Suicide Hotline, and they recommended that he check himself into a mental hospital. He already spent a few days in there, and he still isn't released. While he is there, he meets a large variety of people, which included a sex addict, a girl who scarred her own face with scissors, a guy who is afraid of gravity, and other depressed people. Throughout his journey to get back to his normal life and conquer his depression, he meets many people along the way, and he learns and changes along the way.
The journey that Craig is on is a task journey. The reason why it is a task journey is because his task is to get back to his normal life, and to conquer his depression. He is trying to accomplish that job. Throughout Craig's journey to get back to his normal life, he meets a few positive people on his journey. One positive person that he meets is Noelle, the girl that scarred her own face with scissors. She helps Craig reach his goal by giving him someone comfortable to talk to, and by making him feel like he is not the only one suffering from problems. Another person that positively impacts Craig is his roommate, Muqtada. Muqtada impacts Craig because he makes Craig feel like his depression problem isn't that bad. Muqtada always says things like, "'I pray every day that someday I will get better like you'" (294). Craig thought that he was the lowest it can go, but with Muqtada, he feels better, and is closer to reaching his goal.
There are a few people and events that are a negative effect on him. An event that has a negative effect on him was when he got the few phone calls from his teacher, Mr. Reynolds. He calls the hospital because he wants Craig's labs. This has a negative effect on his journey, because it brings him back to the reason why he even got depressed, because he was stressed over high school. That just adds to his "Tentacles", (things that are hard for him and hold him back). This doesn't help him heal from depression, and if anything, it gets him even more depressed. Another thing that has a negative effect on Craig conquering his depression is his friend Aaron. Aaron doesn't understand Craig's depression, so he makes mean remarks about his depression. Aaron even thinks that Craig got depressed because he can't have Aaron's girlfriend.
Craig is still on his journey, so he is still changing and learning, but so far, Craig learned that he can link himself back to when he wasn't depression to relieve himself of depression, and he learned that there are many people that are in a worse condition than him. His journey is almost done, because he almost conquered his depression thanks to the help of the mental hospital and his friends. Craig also learned that friendship can help you go through a lot, like with his friendship with Noelle. With Noelle, Craig feels comfortable, and he feels like he isn't the only one suffering.
This journey has taught me that in life, you can accomplish anything, as long as you put your mind to it, and if you really try. That is how this journey can extend to life and humanity.
In conclusion, I really like this book so far, and I believe that this journey can be a journey that you can learn from, and I can't wait to see if Craig accomplishes his job.

  1. I agree with all of the things you said, and I like how you gave many examples, or even quotes, to help prove every point you made about the book. I also like that connect the book and it's main ideas back to you in the end. Great job!
